The purported high death rates due to Covid 19 in the Construction Industry reported in the media seem at odds with the official figures that indicate that it is in fact below the national average!
I find the media hype and possible political posturing completely distasteful when talking about the death rate of loved ones, family, friends, colleagues, co-workers and human beings in general. No doubt the possible cause of infection will be a subject of great debate once we finally get clear of this virus, so I think it far too soon for the vultures to be circling when all our efforts should be directed at preventing the number going any higher!
My heart goes out to the families of those concerned during this terrible time.
On another note, I was staggered to see the latest price for some well-known bricks now that production has recommenced. I suspect that there is a reverse logic here when compared to the price of crude oil in that all businesses need to make every effort to recoup any losses resulting from the Covid 19 Lock Down (see my previous posting on ‘Self Preservation’). I suspect as predicted, that as businesses realise the extent of the commercial impact more determination and perhaps a degree of aggression will result in attempts to mitigate the bottom line!
For those looking into potential mitigation, don’t forget to check your Contracts in regard to Escalation. Material price rises are not always at the Contractor or sub-contractor’s risk!
Good Hunting.
